"Exit", by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, based on an idea of Paul Virilio

Commissioned by the Fondation Cartier, Exit was created by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Mark Hansen, Laura Kurgan and Ben Rubin, in collaboration with Stewart Smith and Robert Gerard Pietrusko, based on an idea of philosopher and urbanist Paul Virilio for the exhibition Native Land, Stop Eject (shown in Paris in 2008, in Copenhagen during the 2009 COP15 conference on climate change organized by the UN, and in Bilbao in 2010 for the inauguration of the AlhóndigaBilbao).

Revolutionary in the field of contemporary cartography, the film Exit exhibits human trajectories in a series of animated maps. It was created in collaboration with a large team of scientists, statisticians, environmentalists, geographers and anthropologists using various sources, and displays a dynamic visualization of a database of information about global migration and its causes. Six scenarios are addressed, each of which tells the story of these global changes: POPULATION SHIFTS: CITIES; POLITICAL REFUGEES AND FORCED MIGRATION; REMITTANCES: SENDING MONEY HOME; NATURAL DISASTERS; RISING SEAS, SINKING CITIES; SPEECHLESS AND DEFORESTATION (the latter of which was created in close collaboration with UNESCO).
